Blind Potato Head

Description

A good activity to raise awareness of how blindness can make a simple task difficult.

Resources

A large piece of card for each six - Approximately 1m×1m in size as two arm holes will need to be cut into it.
Drawing implements.
Card potato head limbs (but not arms) and facial features.
Blu-tak to stick the features onto the potato head.
A blindfold.

Instructions

1) Draw the outline of the popular childs toy "Potato head" on one side of the large piece of card. Do this for each six.
2) Make the potato head legs and facial features out of card or paper. They need to be in proportion to the potato head you have just drawn. Make sure you have a set for each six and blu-tak on the back of each feature so they will stick to the potato head.
3) Where the arms of the potato head would naturally be, cut 2 holes large enough for the Cubs to fit their arms through.
4) Each Cub then takes their turn to put on the blindfold. They approach the potato head from behind and put their arms through the arm holes.
5) One by one they are handed a facial feature which they have to try and identify by feel and place in the correct place on the potato head.
6) Once all features are placed on the potato head the Cub should then be shown their results to see how accurately they managed to identify and place the features.
7) Have fun!
