Blackout Poems

Description
Blackout poetry is a type of poetry that can be created by taking written pieces of text from another part, like a book, a newspaper, a magazine, in order to create your own poem. Blackout poetry is a form of ‘found’ poetry, meaning that you select the words that catch your interest from another text making sure they make sense and can design a new poem. After you’re done with that, usually with a black marker, colour over the words you won’t need.
History: Blackout poetry has become very popular in the last couple of years thanks to an American poet and cartoonist. Austin Kleon, a Texas-based writer, has revealed a new way of reading between the lines and encouraged people to do the same.

Instructions
1.First thing you have to do is decide on a text you’ll like to work on. It can be the book you're currently reading, an article from your favourite newspaper or any random piece of text you can find.
2.Scan the text for words you’ll like to use in your poem. Don’t read the text carefully, since you don’t want to recreate that piece, just pick some words you think will do great together.
3.Circle them with a pencil or grab a blank piece of paper and write them down in order. Read the words and see if they make sense, if when you’re putting them together they have meaning.
4.If the story you created doesn’t sound good enough or if you think you need some connecting word, like ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘to’, read the text again and pick up what you need. You can also cross the words that are not a great fit or replace them with new ones.
5.Do a final reading and make sure you erased the circles around the words you don’t want in your poem and that you circled all the ones you need.
6.Once you’ve found a meaningful thread and outlined the words you’re keeping, use a black marker to black out everything that is NOT a word for your poem.
7.Your blackout poem is ready to be displayed or shared with others!
