Directions/Leader Speak
1. Speak - Tonight you are going to be starting your ‘Astronomer badge’. The first
task you need to complete is to know why the pattern of the stars change each
night.
We're all pretty familiar with stars. We see them on most clear nights as tiny,
twinkling pinpricks of light in the sky. But what is a star, exactly? Does anyone
know?
2. Direction - Take answers praise then…Ask for a volunteer to read this to the rest of the group.
Instruct them to speak loud and clear…(you will find this text at the end of this document to
print out separately)
Scout Reading…What is a Star?
A star is a huge ball of gas that emit its own light. It mostly contains
hydrogen and helium and are held together by their own gravity.
They have nuclear fusion reactions going on inside them to support them
against gravity. The Sun is the closest star to Earth.
A star’s colour relies on its temperature: hotter stars emit bluer light and
cooler stars emit redder light.
3. Speak - Great thanks. So what are a pattern of stars called? (constellations)
4. Direction - Take answers praise then…Ask for a volunteer to read this to the rest of the group.
Instruct them to speak loud and clear…(you will find this text at the end of this document to
print out separately)
