Instructions

For this evening's session we are going to be working on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Badge!

This year we’re celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A jubilee is a very special anniversary celebration of the life and rule of a monarch (the King or Queen). Rather than happening every year, Jubilees only mark important stages. Each Jubilee has a name which is used to reflect the length of time the King or Queen has been on the throne, and each one is associated with a different type of precious material:

Silver Jubilee: marks 25 years
Ruby Jubilee: 40 years
Golden Jubilee: 50 years
Diamond Jubilee: 60 years
Sapphire Jubilee: 65 years
Platinum Jubilee: 70 years

Queen Elizabeth the 2nd became the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Head of the Commonwealth of Nations (The Commonwealth of Nations is a group of 54 member states, almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire.) when she was only 25 years old, after her father, King George VI, died on 6th February 1952 from a heart attack (he had been poorly for a while with lung cancer and other illnesses).

Fifteen of the 54 members have Queen Elizabeth the 2nd as their head of state. A head of state is the chief public spokesperson (the person who represents or speaks on behalf of the people) and serves as a leader.

That means she has been Queen for 70 years, and this is the first time that any British monarch has celebrated a Platinum jubilee. The Queen said that she hopes the Platinum Jubilee will bring together families and friends, neighbours, and communities.

Platinum is a pure metal which contains no iron so it cannot rust. It’s rarer and heavier than gold, which makes it more valuable. Platinum is extremely long-lasting, just like our Queen!

The Queen is also our Patron in Scouting, she’s also the Patron of Girl Guiding. (A patron, a bit like St George is our Patron Saint, is a person who gives help, guidance, and protection to a person, organisation, or cause.) The highest award you can get in Scouting is The Queen’s Scout Award, and the highest award in Girl Guiding is The Queen's Guide Award.

In 1953 Scouts assisted the crowds at her Coronation (a coronation is the ceremony when a royal takes the crown and becomes the monarch – the King or Queen). Her coronation was in the summer after she became queen (which was in February 1952). Because her father died suddenly, it took a while to organise her Coronation.

So, this makes it an extra special occasion for us in Scouting.

The Queen has set a great example of Leadership, Patriotism (loyalty to her country and her people), doing her duty to our country and the Commonwealth, showing strength and courage in difficult times, and helping to guide us all through difficult times.

She has also encouraged young people in our Nation and in those of the Commonwealth to come together in friendship and friendly competition, in events like the Commonwealth Games (the Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and, except for 1942 and 1946 during the 2nd World War, has taken place every four years since then. The last one was in Australia in 2018, and the next one is this year in Birmingham, England, from 28 July – 8 August.)

The Scout Promise includes the Queen.
“On my honour, I promise that I will do my best to uphold our Scout values, to do my duty to the Queen, to help other people, and to keep the Scout Law”

We want to mark this special occasion and create great memories for the future!

There is a special Scouts badge for Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and it can be worn on uniform for all of 2022. Occasional badges in respect of national programmes, activities or events may be worn as directed and for such periods as decided by Headquarters.
