Instructions

Recap from last time.

SAY: In the last lesson we learned what the word Cyber means – can anyone remember? The word “Cyber” means anything to do with the internet!

We learned how our homes connects to the internet using cables connected to big computers called servers. These computers contain all the information that we see on the internet.
We also learned how our devices such as our tablets and TVs connect to the internet in our homes using Wireless or WIFI connection

Now introduce the new concepts of information.

ASK: Does anyone know what the word information means?
Information is a set of facts about something or someone. Facts are statements that are true.
ASK: Using the example of the image of the girl (see image in the attachment), can you give me three pieces of information about the girl that are true – e.g.
- The girl has green eyes
- The girl has blonde hair
- The girl is wearing her hair in pigtails
So, we now know information about the girl- <<repeat the facts the ladybirds came up with> - this is information.
ASK: Does anyone know what the phrase “fake news” means?
SAY: So, we know that Information is a set of facts about something or someone that are true.
Fake news are statements that look like facts but are not actually true. This could be because the person believed it to be true, but it was not OR that the person wanted to say something that isn’t true on purpose.
ACTION: read the profile of the ladybird shown and ask the ladybirds to confirm if the details are “information” (so are true) OR if they are “fake news”, (See the image in the attachment)
SAY: On the internet, we need to be careful to make sure that everything we see and hear is information and therefore is true. If you are not sure if something you hear or read is true, then you should ask a grown-up who will be able to help you find out if it is information or if it is fake news.

ACTION: Ladybirds should now take part in Activity three: Fact or Fake news quiz? (Please see attachment 3)
This is a 10-question quiz –
1. Point to each side of the room and explain which is for information or which is for fake news
2. Get the Ladybirds to gather in the centre of the room.
3. Ask each question
4. the Ladybirds answer whether each statement is information or fake news by running to the appropriate side of the room

Now introduce the second concept: what is a password?

Intro: As children grow, they are likely to increase their social media presence. Knowing how to set a secure password and why it needs to be kept private are a vital part of staying safe in the cyber environment, not only on websites but also on home and school networks.
Ask: Can anyone tell me what a password is? A password is a word or a phrase that is kept secret. A password in the context of the internet is like a key that allows us access to our devices and accounts. We always like to think of passwords as being like the keys to our house. We use the key to unlock our front door so that we can get into our house. By entering our password, we are using our “virtual key” to unlock our online accounts and devices and let us in.

Ask: Can you think of things that need a password to get in? Computers, devices, online accounts, games like Fortnite, apps like Disney and YouTube, online banking
Ask: Can you tell me WHY we use passwords? So, our computer and devices know that you are you! If someone tried to use your computer or tablet, they would not know the password so they cannot use it. This is why it is important to keep your password a secret! To stop other people getting access to our computers and devices or getting access to our game accounts. So very simply, passwords are important because they make sure that only the people who are supposed to have access can access. Just like with the keys to your house. Only your family can access your house with the key.

Say: There are four very important things that we need to remember about passwords.
1. If you forget your password, you might not be able to play your favourite games, so it is important that you remember it.
2. It is important that you do not share your password with anyone except your mammy, daddy, carer, or teacher.
3. Always ask your mammy, daddy, carer, or teacher to help you set up a secure password.
4. Be careful to make sure no one else is watching when you enter your password.

Say: Now that we have learned about passwords and why they need to be secure, let’s play a guessing game!
SAY: So we know now that we use passwords to make our devices and apps secure – to stop other people from using them. The next thing we need to know is how to make our passwords safe. If our passwords are too easy then someone might be able to guess them.
ASK: If I decided to use the word “password” as my password, how easy do you think it would be for someone to guess it?
ANSWER: Instantly!

Tips: for creating safe passwords.
Use passwords that are as long as possible
longer = stronger!
Use passwords that are hard to guess
Use numbers in your passwords
Use special characters like ? And !
Make up a silly sentence you will remember!
Example: Elsaismyfavourite1!

Ask: can you think of a silly sentence that would make a good password?
Use the example of Elsaismyfavourite1! – silly sentence with a number and character

Activity 4: Guess the password! Please see attachment 4.
Read the instructions on page one of Activity Sheet 4 attached.
The learning outcome is that the Ladybirds understand if they give too much information away, someone might guess their passwords, and they will also understand the difference between weak and strong passwords
