LEADER PREPARATION
A leader will need to print out the flag templates (or create your own versions). If you have real versions of the UK flag, or the nations within it, then you could display these instead.

GETTING INTO THE ACTIVITY
The United Kingdom Quiz
1) Before the activity, place the four flags of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland & Wales in the four corners of your room.
2) Briefly explain to the group that the United Kingdom is made up of four nations. Can the group name them and identify their flag?
3) Explain that you’ll now read a statement out from the question sheet and they need to decide which of these four nations the fact refers to. Children should go and stand by the flag of the country they believe the answer to be.
4) Once everyone has stood in a corner, reveal the answer.
5) Repeat this process with the rest of the questions. How many can the group guess correctly?
The Flags of the United Kingdom
1) Let each child choose a blank flag of the United Kingdom. We’ve provided all four nations, as well as the UK flag too. Try to make sure all five flags are being made by someone, so you have at least one version of each flag at the end.
2) Children should use tissue paper to add the correct colours to the flags. Do this by cutting small square and then scrunching these up into small balls of paper, which can be glued onto the flag. Keep going until all the white space has vanished and the flag is filled with all the correct colours.
3) At the end use the UK flag to point out how the flags of the nations are included within the flag. (i.e. England, Scotland & NI’s crosses are all shown. Wales was part of the Kingdom of England when the UK flag was first created, this is why their dragon doesn’t feature).
IDEAS TO TAKE THIS FURTHER...
Split into four teams (or as individuals) and play some games. Each team should represent a different part of the United Kingdom. Which team will be the winning team at the end of the game(s).
KEEPING EVERYONE SAFE
