Bear Hunt
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
An accompanied hike to practice navigational skills and hide a "geocache" aka a bear
Resources
Some cheap bears from a poundshop - with a label saying that they belong to your group. I suggest about six or eight.
Maps (including legend) - I would suggest photocopied one each Scout
Compasses
Instructions
Locate an area for the exercise. One with two large areas.
Hike to an obvious place at the center of the area - ours is a cross roads with an equestrian center at it.
Divide into two groups.
Instructions for Scouts:
• Hide three bears within the boundaries marked.
• Write down the accurate grid reference for each one.
• Write down instructions to help Scouts find each one.
• We do want to find the bears, so do not make it too difficult.
• We will meet up at _____ at ____
• Give the grid references and instructions to the other patrol.
• Find and retrieve the hidden Bears.
• We will meet up at _____ at _____
Have adults with each parties. Those adults swap over so they can help locate the bears, if the Scouts need the help.
Along the way, take time to get each of the Scouts:
- To find where they are
- Work out a grid reference
- Take a bearing and follow a bearing
- In summary - all of the requirements of navigator badge
