Two sessions to cover the Beaver Scouts 'Builder badge.'

Resources

Lots of paper A3. A4. coloured origami, straws and card.
String or cotton
Equipment: Scissors. Selotape. Rulers. 2p pieces as weights. Glue. Sticky labels

Instructions

Session 1:

Show a visual aid of a suspension bridge, point out the beam, an arch, and where it is suspended.
Name children: Suspension. Arched. Beam. Read the adapted story of the 'Billy Goats Gruff' Beavers run around circle when their name is mentioned. - 10 mins
With paper:
Demonstrate a folded beam
Demonstrate an arch
Demonstrate a tube
Everybody to make a bridge out of paper, selotape and string . Not allowed to stick it to the table. - 15 mins
Measure - by span underneath
Test bridges by finding out how many 2p it will hold up - by strength. - 10 mins

Give design brief: To build an arched, beam or suspension bridge using card, paper, straws, string and selotape..
Show Beavers examples of the two elevations for each bridge type:: Side elevation and birds eye

On A3 paper Beavers (alone or in pairs) produce two collages (a side elevation and a birds eye elevation), by sticking on coloured paper to represent the materials they will use to build their bridge e.g. red squares/rectangles/ arches, circles for card, blue strips for straws, yellow strips for string.
They can write an s on their design to show where selotape may be used. 20 mins

Name their designs to keep for another week.

Session 2

Children have their designs given back and plenty of materials for building their bridges.
Build bridges - 40 mins

Beavers exhibit their bridges with their designs. with a sticky number so their bridge is sort of
anonymous
Beavers walk around finished bridges with a chart to complete with a number to evaluate: strength,
length, good to look at, - 10 mins

Log chew: Beavers may comment on one bridge from their chart. - 10 mins
