Birdfeed cookie

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Birdseed, mixed together with gelatine and shaped inside a cookie cutter to make a hanging birdfeed cookie.

If Beavers bring their own cookie-cutter(s) from home then the setting of the cookie can be done at home after the meeting.

Could be adapted with level of assistance for difficulty for Cubs or Squirrels.

Resources

Bowl for mixing gelatine + spoon.
Individual bowls/spoons for Beavers to do their own gelatine/seed mixing. (Adult supervision for hot water).
Cookie cutter.
Greaseproof paper to put the 'cookies' on.
Bird seed.
Gelatine (ratio below is for powder)
String/twine.
Short stick or cut straw (ensure this is long enough to go through the cookie thickness and able to be grasped to remove once set).

Ratios: Approx 1 tbs gelatine powder: 1 cup water : 1 cup of seed. Makes 5 medium sized cookies. (Suggest you test these ratios first!)

Instructions

Adult:
Dissolve the gelatine in a bowl with hot water. Let the dissolved gelatine cool to lukewarm. The best depth for the cookies seems to be around 1cm thick in order to allow them to dry hard. Gelatine needs to be quite thick in order to not just drain through the birdseed.

Beavers:
Divide the gelatine between smaller bowls and mix in the birdseed. Ensure all the seed is fully coated in gelatine.
Spoon the seed mixture into the cookie cutters and insert a straw to make a hole near the top for hanging.
Refridgerate for several hours until set.
Remove from fridge and allow the seed-cookies to dry out for several hours (ideally overnight)
Gently remove from cookie cutter and remove the straw/stick.
Thread the string through the hole and hang in the garden.
