Seerah story and activity: The Spider

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Share the story of the spider who was given an important job by God and share amazing facts about the engineering skills of a spider. Do a STEM activity to allow the children to engineer a spider web strong enough to hold a small stone.

Resources

Sticks
Wool or string, ideally white
Small stones/pebbles.

Alternatively
Cardboard with a circle or opening shaped similar to a cave with holes punched around the edge
String or wool
Safety pins or plastic needles if available.

Instructions

Retell the story of the hijra of the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and how a small spider was instrumental in keeping them safe on their perilous journey to Madina. We used the book 'The Wonderous Web by Razana Noor'. Discuss how we sometimes overlook/look down on spiders/our own abilities and recount some amazing facts about spiders and how they engineer their webs (see fact sheet with a few examples).

For the STEM activity, present the beavers with sticks and wool/string (if weather allows they can do this outside and collect their own materials) and let them craft their own spiders webs. Once they are happy allow them to test the strength of their webs with a small stone/pebble.
Alternatively, for a shorter activity, cardboard can be cut in a hill shape with a cave 'opening' surrounding by hole punches that the children can use safety pins tied securely to one end of the string, to thread through the holes to make a web similar to that mentioned in the story
