Knowledge of recovery position
Instructions
1. How to help someone who is ill or had an accident, including how to reassure them.
- Relay race: Each team will take it in turns running to get a card, once they have all the cards, as a team they have to decide which is helpful and which is not (have some obvious ones 'get a grown up' 'colour them in with blue crayon' etc and some to prompt more discussion).
2. How to assist someone with a bleed.
- Talk through how to help someone who is bleeding - apply pressure and get help. Let the Beavers practice bandaging on each other. Talk about if someone has a small cut, that cleaning & a plaster would be appropriate.
3. How to call 999.
- Use a video clip from the CBBC programme 'Operation Ouch' - this talks through the process in a child-friendly way, it also doesn't use information that will become outdated quickly. If any Beavers show real interest or would like to learn more about first aid/the body, this is a good resource to direct them to.
4. How to help someone who is unconscious.
- Talk about what might be important to consider? E.g. getting help, checking if breathing, opening the airway. Demonstrate the recovery position to the Beavers and get them to practice in small groups. Emphasise that it doesn't have to be textbook, but realistic, just concentrating on the key points (on their side, airway open).
If there is any time leftover, you could set some small scenarios for groups to have a go at.
