Explain what Mandalas are to the young people:
Mandalas have been used for thousands of years. They are believed to have originated in ancient India and were first used by Hindus as an aid for meditation.
Mandalas earn an important status in a number of spiritual traditions. It has been used to establish a sacred place, guide the person spiritually and help aid meditation.
The most popular type of Native American Mandala in the Western World is the dream catcher. Dream catchers are used as a symbol of protection to ward off bad dreams and nightmares etc...
Work in small groups to create Mandala using nature resources found around them give them points if they can identify correctly the natural materials they have picked up.
Once finished have a look round each others creations and discuss why everyone chose the patterns, items, colours, etc.... and reflect how different they are.
