Ready Steady Cook – Expedition Practice

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

As part of their training for an expedition, Explorers are to buy the ingredients and prepare a meal that could be cooked in the evening when on an expedition.

Resources

- Ingredients (bought by the Explorers)
- Trangia stove (or whatever cooker are going to be used on the Expedition)
- Meths / fuel
- Wooden spoon (or similar)
- Kinfe
- Scales (for Leaders to weigh the ingredients as part of the judging)

Remember this is part of their training for an expedition so the only utensils available should be those that they will have on an expedition.

Instructions

To get them to thinking about the key factors of expedition cooking, meals are to be scored in the following categories;

- Taste
- Cost of the ingredients
- Weight (they will be carrying their ingredients)
- Number of calories

Explorers can buy the ingredients as a group and cost and weight should be divided by the number in the group.

When cooking the Explorers should be in pairs or groups of three as they would be if they were cooking on an Expedition.

According to the NHS men need about 2000 kcal per day while ladies need about 1400 kcal per day. When on an expedition you my burn up to 3000 kcal per day so meals should be high in calories.

As well as scoring the meals constructive feedback can be given as to how much rubbish they have created as this will need to be taken home.
