Survival Exercise
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
With a group of at least three other Explorers, take part in a survival exercise lasting two nights. The group should:
Cook all meals over an open fire
Construct a shelter of natural or salvaged materials and sleep in it
Cook without utensils or aluminium foil (although a knife may be used)
Resources
You'll need someone with a greenfield nights away permit and a small patch of woodland or other suitable location.
For each group of 4 explorers you will need:
2 x tarp/groundsheet
paracord or light rope for guys, lashings etc.
a suitable survival/bush knife (the Morakniv 511 work well and are affordable)
a billy-can, flint & steel, axe, saw.
As a backup, bring a small expedition style tent for the explorers in case of inclement weather (but don't tell them about it). You may also need to arrange additional wood for fires if there isn't any available as deadfall or supplied by the site.
Instructions
Before the weekend practice some pioneering skills and demonstrate shelter building etc. Also plan a menu that makes full use of the backwoods cooking skills that the explorers should have picked up, and practice some of that too.
I recommend making the survival kit in advance of the weekend too, so that they've had time to think their way into what is needed to manage a weekend off grid, and the extra pieces that they will need.
Make a note of when last light is for the place you are camping at and then make sure the explorers can arrive about 2-3 hours before it will be fully dark to give them enough time to build a good shelter. Spend the weekend there, cooking on a range of different types of fire.
