Mini Pioneering - Da Vinci Bridge
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
YP work in small groups to build a Da Vinci Bridge.
This can be run as a 45 minute base, if Scouts work it out from written instructions, or a 10-15 minute 'incident base' challenge, if a full model bridge is built for them to copy. (Explorers should be quicker than this, so consider adding extra challenge if using this for an Explorer incident base)
If running as a 10-15 minute base, suggest that they are given a model to copy instead of written instructions.
Risk assessment items:
Be aware of splinters -don't slide hands on rough wood
These will not be strong enough for Scouts to stand on
Resources
Lollipop Sticks or other 'grippy wood' cut to appropriate sizes. (Note that the standard 5 foot Scout 'staves' do not work well for this, as they are too rounded and slippery, you will need wood with flat edges to increase the friction)
Written Instructions (see attachment)
If outside - a tarp to assemble it on
Optional items:
Screen/Laptop - if showing a video demo
Extra sticks - if providing an example bridge to follow
Timer - if groups are competing to be the fastest
Items to balance on the bridge e.g. small pots, coins
Pack of cards if adding extra layer of challenge to the process
Instructions
1. Split the YP up into small groups e.g. a Patrol or 2 or 3 YP
2. EITHER show this video - https://youtu.be/D7XrneFpZck?si=6Y8cBhndFUO7-LiT, OR set up a pre-prepared bridge for them to copy.
3. Hand out sticks and copy of the instructions
4. YP follow instructions to build bridge
5. If you wish; use a small pot and add coins to see how much weight the bridge will hold.
Follow up options for reflection:
- Invite the Scouts to discuss how they worked as a team to solve the problem and how they might improve their teamwork next time.
- Ask the Scouts for their theories as to why the bridge works
Option to increase the challenge level (e.g. for Explorers on an incident base):
Each YP takes a card from a small selection available (only 3 suits). Each card denotes which ability restriction they will have:
* Clubs = not able to use their legs/walk around, but can use hands/voice and can be piggy backed into a location to be more useful (including within arms reach to help with building the bridge)
* Spades = not able to use their arms/hands to point/build the bridge, but can walk around
* Hearts = not able to speak (but can use hands so become the engine of the operation)
