Description

An opportunity to engage the section in a planning activity for the next term. We will reflect on the previous term, identifying improvements, and then decide which badges and activities to pursue in the coming term. We'll do this around a campfire, with basic campfire snacks and hot chocolate.

Resources

Campfire:
- Tinder
- Kindling
- Dry logs
- Fire-making tool, such as a lighter or fero rod
- A contained fire-bed

Snacks:
- Popcorn or marshmallows
- Cocoa powder
- Containers for cooking both

Planning:
- Badge poster OR badge folders for each patrol
- Sticky notes
- Pens
- Sheets of small stickers, a few mm each

Instructions

Before the meeting:
- Gather required materials
- Instruct section to bring mugs from home for the hot chocolate

Preparation:
- Prepare fire materials
- Start fire (Note: This is not an activity for fire making, we're focussed on planning)
- Distribute pens and stickies into piles for each patrol
- Start warming the milk or water for the hot chocolate
- Hang the badge poster somewhere nearby

During opening:
- Inform section of the plan
- Cover basic fire safety

Cooking:
- Assign a leader to handling the cooking of the hot chocolate and maintenance of the fire

Reflection:
- Give 3-5 minutes for all young people to write down positive things, and things that they would change, from the previous term
- All ideas are then read out-loud
- In patrols, each group comes up with 3 ideas that they would like to implement during the next term. 15 minutes.
- Each patrol shares their ideas

Badge-planning:
- Each scout is given 3 votes and will use the stickies to spend those votes by placing them on the badges that they would like to progress towards in the coming term
- Votes are tallied by one of the YP
- Select the top voted items to be incorporated into the programme for next term

Documentation:
- Get the YP to write-up the selected badges and changes that they would like to implement during the next term

Remaining time:
- Either games or a deeper dive into which activities we could include
