Description

This is an activity write up to accompany the annual Woking District Incident Night Hike (INH). The INH is for the Scouts section and takes place in November each year on Wisley Common, near Birchmere. It is arranged by the District Scouts team.

(This is not an official "District" document, it just sharing how one Troop approaches this event - your own Troop's approach may vary greatly from this note)

The attachment here provides some example OSM wording for Troops who wish to put out an 'expression of interest' signup to their Scouts. This is not part of the District's formal process, and the District permission form process will still need to be completed by all participants.

Full leader briefing packs are prepared by the (long suffering) District team, so are not repeated here

Each participating Troop is usually required to provide 1 x incident base per competing team they enter into the competition. Each team will have 10 minutes to complete each activity, so they need to be short and sweet. Leaders will have to submit a Risk Assessment to the District in advance, and provide all equipment and materials for that base.

Instructions

Leaders will be on the base they are running all evening, and will only be able to roam and explore the other bases if they have sufficient cover on their own base. For this reason we recommend securing the assistance of extra leaders or friendly parents to spread the load a little.

Plan to take some warm drink/fun snacks, and expect to stay on the base until the last young person has been accounted for. This means it is advisable to arrange for another parent to collect and take home leaders kids/adult volunteers kids.

Take care with assigning badge credit:
-you will need to MANUALLY add the staged 'hikes' credit by adding a new column in the records for that badge, and adding the badge credit to your OSM event.
