Jet Lag: The Wide Game

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

This is a wide game based around Jet Lag: The Game (https://www.youtube.com/@jetlagthegame). It's a control-point based game, where teams must complete challenges to claim a point, with some challenges being easy and some harder. Challenges are being added as Scouts come up with them or the series does, so the list may get bigger; if you have any to add, let us know.

The intention behind this game was that it can be customised to a site simply be the preparation of getting a site/ area map and marking up the different control points. Replayability comes from the number of challenges: there are enough to equip two or three teams with enough to completely claim fifteen control-points each, and swap challenges twice without any of them getting a repeat.

The risk assessment is attached as a document, rather than being on OSM; this may be modified later.

Resources

Challenge cards (there should be at least 20% more challenges than control points); the current set of cards is attached.
Site map marked with control points (sample maps attached).
Chart of control points (plus pens/ clipboards) (sample chart attached).
Walkie-talkies (or similar to allow communications).
Challenge specific kit (to be stored at base/ site)
• Morse/ Semaphore chart
• Pens and paper
• Packet of sweets in multiple distinct flavours (but not shapes)
• Biscuits with filling (such as custard creams) that can be separated into two pieces

Instructions

Setup
Divide into teams. Fewer teams will work better. Teams should include a reasonable distribution of ages.
Assign a leader to each of the teams; this could be a responsible older Scout/ Explorer, or an adult/ Young Leader. The leader must:
• Be able to be in contact with other team leaders and base (walkie-talkie, WhatsApp chat, etc)
• Be responsible for ensuring that challenges are completed fairly
Leaders are given a random set of challenge cards (an equal number each). The randomness may be reduced by checking that “immediately claim” and ‘longer’ challenges are distributed between piles to ensure a fairer distribution, or removing such challenges entirely.
Explain rules and safety guidelines.

Rules
Teams each head for a control point that is not Being Claimed and has not been Claimed. Teams cannot attempt to claim a point that another team is Claiming or has Claimed.
When they reach a control point, the leader announces (via walkie-talkie or group chat) that they are claiming that point. Everyone should update their charts to show that the point is not available anymore.
The leader draws a challenge card and reads it to the team.
• If the leader determines that the challenge is impossible or hazardous (due to weather, availability of free space, etc) they (the leader) can choose to veto it without penalty and draw a new challenge.
• If the team determines that the challenge is impossible/ too difficult for them they (the team) can veto the challenge. The first time they do this there is no penalty and they draw a new challenge; on any subsequent veto they forfeit the control point (other teams can claim it and the team cannot attempt to claim it again).
The team completes the challenge. Some challenges can be failed (normally without a veto penalty), in which case draw another challenge if it is failed.
When the challenge is completed, announce that the point is now Claimed.

Ending
The game ends when:
• One team completes all their challenge cards.
• One team controls a majority of control points (might not be possible in games with high numbers of teams/ points).
• The time limit (established at setup) runs out.
