Digital Reactions
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
In this activity, Cubs will explore the scout hut, reacting to various images by placing tokens in reaction categories (Like, Love, Sad, Laugh, Disgust) and writing comments on paper below the images. Adult helpers will assist in ensuring appropriate comments and tally the reactions. At the end, the group will discuss the results, emphasising the lesson that online actions, like comments and reactions, leave a lasting digital footprint, encouraging thoughtful and positive online behaviour.
Resources
•4-6 printed A4 images (pictures of various fun or relatable items for the Cubs)
•Tape (for sticking images to the walls)
•4-6 reaction category sheets (with “Like,” “Love,” “Sad,” “Laughing,” and “Vomit” written on them)
•Tokens (4-6 per Cub Scout, using your usual tokens for sixes points)
•Pens or coloring pens (one for each Cub)
•Sheets of paper taped under each image for comments
•Whistle or signal to call them back to the circle
Instructions
Preparation/ Setup:
•Use tape to put up 4-6 images in different spots around the scout hut, making sure there’s enough space around each one for the Cubs to gather.
•Below each image, tape a blank sheet of paper for the Cubs to write their comments.
•Next to each image, tape the reaction category sheet, with space for the Cubs to place their tokens under the appropriate reaction (Like, Love, Sad, Laughing, Vomit).
•Assign an adult helper to each image to monitor and assist the Cubs in writing comments and placing their tokens in the correct reaction category.
Instructions (given in the circle):
•Explain that they’re going to explore the room and look at pictures just like they might online. For each picture, they can react to it and leave a comment, just like they would with posts on the internet.
•Give each Cub 4-6 tokens and a pen.
•Explain that they will walk around the room, look at the pictures, and then:
1. React to the picture by placing one token in the reaction category that matches how they feel about the picture (Like, Love, Sad, Laugh, or Disgust).
2. Comment by writing what they think about the picture on the sheet below it, including their name. Remind them that it should be something they would be proud to show to everyone.
3. Tell the Cubs that there will be adults at each picture to help them if they need it, and to make sure their comments are appropriate and go in the right place.
•Let the Cubs know they should walk, not run, from picture to picture, and that they’ll have enough time to look at each one.
Closing Remarks (given back in the circle):
•Once all the Cubs have placed their tokens and written their comments, gather them back into the circle.
•Leaders will share the top reactions for each image and read out some of the comments.
Message for the Cubs:
“Just like what we did here, whenever we do something online—like posting a comment or reacting to a picture—it leaves a mark. It’s called a digital footprint. It shows what we like, what we say, and even where we’ve been. So it’s really important to make sure what we leave behind is kind and something we’re proud of!”
Emphasise that what they say and do online can be seen by others, just like how everyone saw their reactions and comments during the activity.
