Week 1
Rope/string/twine
Broom handles
Instructions for each knotting base
Knotting instructions for cubs to take home for practice ready for mini pioneering project in session 2

Week 2
Rope
Canes for mini pioneering project
8 containers for water (4 for collecting 4 for transporting water)- open top, size required will depend on size of canes available
Rope making machines x2 (bring from home)
Instructions for each knot
Instructions for knotting machines

Week 3
Rope
Canes
Rubber bands
Plastic cups big enough for projectile
Something to make holes in cups (knife/scissors)
Ping pong balls/tennis balls

Instructions

Week 1 - Knots
Approximately 20 minutes at each base.
Cubs learn each knot ready for the relay at the end of the night and in preparation for mini pioneering project in session 2.

Base 1 – Square lash
Base 2 – Reef knot and Sheet bend
Base 3 – Clove hitch and Figure 8

Game: Knotting relay

Week 2 - Rope making and mini pioneering
Cubs split into 4 teams
Each team makes enough from for 1 piece each, ideally 40cm or longer (could be I long bit cut up; would be quicker)
Each base has 2 teams working on it

Base 1 – Rope making
Base 2 – Mini pioneering
Using at least 1 knot and 1 lash

Challenge/game:
Using their mini project each team has to transport their water container from one location to another; the container should be fully supported by the mini project, i.e. no steadying it with hands! Could set obstacles out to make it harder (over/under/round). Team with the most water in their container at the end wins.

Week 3 - Pioneering - catapults
Cubs split into 4 teams
Each team makes enough from for 1 piece each, ideally 40cm or longer (could be I long bit cut up; would be quicker)
Each base has 2 teams working on it
