Instructions

Example scene

DR ABC
Have a patient on the floor, breathing, unconscious, not bleeding.
Explain that this is a first aid scene and there’s something called a primary survey first aiders should do when they come to a scene; this is DR ABC.
Ask the YPs what they think the letters stand for; what do they want you to do as the first aider?
Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation (DR ABC)
What next?

Get help
Why? They can help with first aid, make a phone call, get a first aid kit, support you!
How? Shout! Phone someone. If you’re not able to do this put patient in recovery position (covered later) and go get help.
Calling 999
- Responsive/breathing or not
- What's happened
- Location
- Your contact number (in case you get cut off)
- Description of person (age, usual state of health (if known))
- They can help guide you through how to help the casualty while you wait for emergency services to arrive
Patent is starting to regain consciousness, but they are very confused. What next?

Reassurance
Stay calm yourself
Explain what you're doing
Say "help is on the way", “you’ll be fine”, “we’ll have this sorted in no time”
Are they panicking? Breathing exercise - repeat a breathing pattern, eg. inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4 (also good for panic attacks)

Working backwards through the ABC
Necker
Get into pairs.

Circulation - Bleeding
Ask the YPs how to treat a wound that is bleeding - Pressure
Small cut - Plaster
Large wound - Bandage

Ask the YPs how they would treat a wound that has something stuck in it.
Should they remove the item from the wound? No, put pressure either side, but do not move the object

Practice dressing a large wound that (dosen’t have anything in it) using your necker
Show how to make a bandage out of a triangle (fold/roll it into a long bandage)
Knot should be on to of the wound to help apply pressure
Not too tight (don’t want to stop blood getting around the whole body, just want to stop it coming out!

Ask the YPs how they would treat a burn - with a bandage?
Burns need cooling, ideally with cold tap water
How long should the burn be under the tap for? 10 minutes, but if it’s still burning after that, then longer
If blistering cover with clingfilm (protect against germs) and see a Dr

Breathing but unconscious - Recovery position
St John Ambulance guide sheets
DR ABC sheets
Enough space on the floor, clear of any obstacles so we can practice putting someone in the recovery position.

Get into pairs or small groups and spread out.
Move closest arm out of way (out by your side or up in a ‘stop’ sign)
Farthest leg bent - put foot near other knee (should stay where it is better)
Farthest hand on nearest cheek and hold it there
Use the raised knee to roll towards you
Recheck airway - tilt head back gently and make sure face is angled towards the ground (vomit can come out)
Check breathing from side - would normally put face or hand near patent’s face to check breathing - don’t put face near patient’s - COVID

Not breathing and unconscious
Teddy per person
Music

Spread out.
Ask the YPs want you should do if your patient is not, or if they stop breathing - CPR
Explain that the most important thing is the chest compressions - there might be blood or other nasty things on the person’s face
Ask them how to give chest compressions
- Hands face down then one on top of the other intertwining fingers
- Use the heel of the palm to give compressions to the chest
- Explain where on the chest - centre of rib cage where it starts to rise
Ask them how many beats per minute - 100bpm
- Play music and get them to give their teddy chest compressions to the beat - play 3 songs, trying to play something they each know
- Adele - Rumour Has It (has a good beat at the start to get them going)
- Imperial March (good for Star Wars fans)
- Baby Shark (lots fo kids know this one)
