Wolf Island
Instructions
Paper and pen/pencils (Red, Green, Blue) per cub
Read out the island descriptions:
Make sure the paper has a long edge at the bottom
Draw the 4 main points of the compass in the top right hand corner
Draw an island that is roughly oval and fills most of the paper
There is a circular lake in the middle of the island
A river flows from the lake down to the south coast
There is a police station on the north side of the lake
A dual carriageway runs from the east coast to the west coast via the police station
In the south east of the island there is a place of worship
There is a picnic site on the south west coast
There is a patch of coniferous trees on the north east coast
There is a campsite just west of the trees
There is a bus station on the south side of the dual carriageway just west of the lake
A post office is just south of the bus station
A town hall is between the lake and the east coast
There is a school east of the river
A footpath runs from the place of worship to the school
There is a fire station east of the lake
There is a hospital in the north west of the island
Everyone hold up their completed drawing (leader to share the final map).
Minesweeper (~1 hour)
Prep
Grid on floor
N, E, S, W on walls
Instructions
Each team has their own entrance to the minefield (in the corners)
Cubs can only call out compass points (start with the 4 points then move on to 8)
Cubs can only move their player one square at a time; each Cub should get a go at being player and marking out the map
If the player lands on a mine, the Leader tells them and everyone makes explosion noise
Cubs need to mark on their blank map where the mines are to find a safe path to the exit
When the player explodes their turn is over and the next Cub enters the minefield from the beginning, being directed by the others in their team
When leader is happy they understand the 4 compass points, or they have got a player through the minefield safely, then they can move on to round 2 (8 compass points)

Prep
Lay out symbol cards face up.
Instructions
Cubs at other end of room to cards
Leader calls out name of symbol (hiding picture)
Cubs look up symbol on OS map key
Cubs run up and try to find the correct symbol card
Confirm the card with the leader
If correct team gets a point (return card to floor)
Shrinking Brownsea Island
Instructions
Spread out a large groundsheet and stand the beavers/cubs some distance away.
On the word ‘go’ the players try to stand on the island
When the leader calls ‘stop’ any player not on the island is out
All players leave the island, which is folded to make it smaller
The game is repeated until only 2 players are left or until the groundsheet can’t be folded any more
