Write names and Houses on the outside of the book
Punch holes on the spine and tie string through
When all other equipment is finished they can colour in some of the pictures in the book.
School bag
Instructions
Give each student a bag.
Empty out the stickers – they should have a House sticker each and can use the letter stickers to put their names onto the bags.
Once names and House stickers are on, use the other stickers (and pens) to decorate and personalise their bags.
Once all wands are made you can use the glue guns to stick items to the bag
Make sure they have somewhere to write their name
Wands
Instructions
Use hot glue to decorate your wand – circles and spirals are very effective (see examples for ideas).
Once the glue is set you can decorate with felt tip pens.
Games (also spare games for sleepover)
Two Headed Dragons - Spare
Description
If outdoors, define a playing area that the students must stay within.
Choose two students (from different Houses) to be the two headed dragon. They need to chase the other students. If they are tagged, they join the dragon.
This continues until there are four students in the dragon at which point it splits into two new dragons, who continue chasing and splitting.
Continue in this way until all but one student has been caught – award five House points to the final student.
Repeat the game with two new students from the other two houses.
Snake Hoop Race
Resources
Hoops (1 per team)
Description
Each House stands in a line holding hands to form a snake. The front student must be behind the start line.
The back student in each House is given a hoop in their free hand.
On the start signal the students must work together to move the hoop along the snake.
Once the hoop has passed along to the student two ahead, the back student moves to the front of the snake, and so on as the hoop moves along.
Each House must continue in this way until all players are across the finish line.
Two rules:
They must not move the snake forwards other than by having the back student come to the front.
They must not release hands at any time.
If any House breaks either of these rules the front student will be sent to the back (each time the rules are broken).
Petrificus Totalus - Spare
Description
One student is chosen to be Dumbledore – this student leaves the room/playing area.
Another student is chosen to be the Basilisk – make sure that all the remaining students know who has been chosen.
Dumbledore now returns. The students should walk slowly around the playing area. If the Basilisk looks them directly in the eye and blinks/winks they must freeze and not move again during the game.
Dumbledore must try to guess who the Basilisk is (they can have a maximum of three guesses). If Dumbledore guesses correctly within three guesses, award them as many House points as there are remaining unfrozen students at the point of the correct guess. If Dumbledore uses up all their guesses the game ends and the Basilisk wins as many House points as there are frozen students at that point.
Repeat with a different Dumbledore and a different Basilisk until each House has had a go at both roles.
