The Task
Your group’s task is to extinguish the candle from a distance of three metres, using only the equipment provided.

Equipment
- candles and matches
- jam jar
- something to mark the 3 metres (eg, rope or chalk)
- squeeze bottles (eg detergent bottle) OR
- water pistols OR
- sticks (6 each, all 1m long), rubber bands, a tin (eg condensed milk) and string.

There are four ways of snuffing out candles:
a Use a squeeze bottle and fire at the candle.
b Use a water pistol and fire at the candle
c Join the sticks together, tie the tin on the end (open end down) and using a long string to control it, lower the tin onto the candle. See the diagram for guidance.
d Place the candle in a jam jar and place it somewhere about three metres off the ground. The group has to extinguish the candle while remaining on the ground. The solution is to put something over the
top of the jar to exclude the air.
