Contaminated Logs

Description
The Task
Can your group, working from outside the roped-off area, place the contaminated logs into the decontamination bin provided, using only the materials provided? Speed is essential to prevent the contamination spreading.
Resources
Equipment
- 4 logs, about 8-10 cm in diameter and 30 cm long and able to be stood up on one end. (1½ litre lemonade bottles half filled with water would also work.)
- container, such as a rubbish bin or a bucket.
- rope to mark off the area
- large rubber band (one made from a car inner tyre is ideal.)
- 4 pieces of rope, each about 3 metres long.
Instructions
Instructions
At about waist height, rope off an area which is about three metres across. Place the bin in the centre and stand the logs on end around the bin.
The solution to this problem is to tie the ropes to the rubber band. Then with a member of the group holding the end of each rope, it is possible to manoeuvre the rubber band over the log, each member pulling so that the rubber band becomes larger. Once it is over the log, two members opposite each other pull to tighten the rubber band around the log while the other two slacken their ropes. It is then possible to lift it over the bin, when all four pull again to release it.
