A Senior Branch GCE Activity to show how global issues connect to our lives and communities and explore creative ways to take action together.

Resources

• Large paper/flipchart
• A card & envelope per person
• Markers & pens

Instructions

1. Energiser: Silent Line-Up (5 min)
• Without speaking, line up by one of the following: Birth month, shoe size, height, etc.
• Reflect: How did we work as a team without words? Who naturally led?

2. Main Activity: Global Problem Tree (30 min)
• Split the group into small groups (max 5 girls per group).
• Give each group a flipchart and marker. Ask them to draw a giant tree and three large clouds.
• On the tree, write: Roots = causes, Trunk = problem, Branches = effects
• In each cloud, write: (1) Who is affected? (2) Who can help? (3) Where do we have influence?
• Using the chosen global issues the girls in the Unit care about such as Climate Change, Fast Fashion, Digital World, Migration, Gender Equality, Mental Health or a topic of your choice, ask groups to discuss and write their key points on the sheet.
• After 20 minutes of discussion, each group shares their top three to five points with everyone (depending on available time).

3. Secret Mission (10 min)
• In pairs, design a secret mission card to support action on the chosen topic. Examples:
o Share one fact about this topic with another person.
o Watch a short video or listen to a podcast that explains the topic in an interesting way.
o Research an organisation or group that works to support this topic.

• Each pair puts their secret mission in an envelope. The Leader mixes them up.
• Each Girl picks an envelope from the floor and commits to doing their best to complete that mission over the next month.
