Description

### Squirrel Scout Activity: "Dodge the Ball, Collect the Cones!"

**Objective:**
This fun and energetic game challenges the Squirrels to be quick, agile, and alert as they dodge a swinging ball while collecting cones placed around a circle.

---

### **Setup:**

1. Arrange the cones in a circle, with enough space between each cone for the Squirrels to safely move around.
2. The leader stands in the center of the circle with the ball tied to the end of the rope.
3. The leader begins swinging the ball around in circles, keeping a consistent speed.

---

### **Safety Tips:**

* Ensure the ball is soft and the rope is not too long or heavy.
* Make sure there’s enough space between Squirrels to avoid accidental collisions.
* Remind the Squirrels to be mindful of each other while moving around the circle to prevent bumps or falls.

---

### **Reflection Questions After the Game:**

1. What strategies did you use to avoid the ball and collect cones?
2. How did you feel when you got hit by the ball? What did you do next?
3. Did you work as a team or just focus on collecting the cones by yourself?
4. What would you do differently next time to collect more cones?

This activity helps with agility, quick thinking, and teamwork, all while having a blast in a safe environment!

Resources

**Materials Needed:**

* Soft ball (can be a beach ball, soft foam ball, or any non-harmful ball)
* Rope (to tie the ball)
* Cones (around 10-15 depending on the group size)
* A large open space (preferably outdoors or a hall)

Instructions

4. Make sure the ball is swinging low enough for the Squirrels to duck, dodge, and dive but not so low that it’s a safety hazard.

---

### **Rules:**

1. The Squirrels start outside the circle of cones. On the leader's signal, they must enter the circle.
2. While the leader swings the ball around, the Squirrels need to dodge, duck, or dive to avoid being hit by the ball.
3. The goal is to collect as many cones as possible. The Squirrels can pick up cones while moving around the circle but must be careful not to touch the ball.
4. If a Squirrel gets hit by the ball, they must return to the edge of the circle and wait for the next round.
5. The game continues until all the cones are collected or after a set time limit (e.g., 5 minutes).
6. At the end of each round, count how many cones each Squirrel has collected. The one with the most cones wins the round!

---

### **Variations for Extra Fun:**

* **Speed Challenge:** Increase the speed of the ball after each round to make it more challenging.
* **Team Relay:** Divide the group into two teams. One team member goes in at a time to collect cones. The first team to collect all cones wins.
* **Cone Freeze:** If a Squirrel is hit by the ball, they freeze in place and must stay frozen until another player tags them to "unfreeze" them.
