Description

Squirrels decorate a plant pot with a character label and grow cress to create funny “hair” as it sprouts.

Resources

Small plant pots
Labels printed with attached character template
Crayons or colouring pencils
Cress seeds
Compost

Instructions

Activity 1 (grow part of Let it Grow badge)
1. Give each child a label showing a child in a Squirrels uniform (template attached).
2. Ask them to colour in their label.
3. Stick the label onto a small plant pot.
4. Fill the pot with compost.
5. Sprinkle cress seeds on top.
6. Explain that the cress will grow to look like the child’s “hair”
7. Talk together about what plants need to grow — water, light, air and soil.

Activity 2 (care & share part of Let it Grow badge)
1. Ask the children to take their cress pots home and keep them watered, and positioned in sunlight.
2. After 1-2 weeks ask parents to send their child in with a picture of their cress pot.
3. Ask the children to share what changes they have seen since planting their seeds.
