Instructions

At the meeting:
- [ ] Before the young people arrive, put out “Market Place” tables in the middle of the room.
- [ ] Get clean chopping boards and knives ready.
- [ ] As the young people arrive they can put their “donations” on the central tables.
- [ ] Flag break.
- [ ] Explain the evening’s format, which is split into two parts:

First half (approx. 30 mins)
- [ ] This is a team competition for judges (Leaders) to decide the best sandwich. Team members of the winning team will get first dibs on sandwich ingredients for their individual sandwiches later!
- [ ] There will be 4 teams, each creating a showstopper sandwich between them. The 4 categories will be:
Best veggie option sandwich
Best sandwich to take on a hike
Best named sandwich
Best selling sandwich in a cafe
- [ ] Each team will get 10 tokens. A token buys one portion at the “Market Place” (e.g. 2 slices of bread or a handful of lettuce or a stack of 6 cucumber slices). Teams don’t need to spend all 10 tokens if they don’t want/need to.
- [ ] After 15 minutes, each team will present their sandwich to the Troop, trying to convince the judges why theirs is a competition winner.
- [ ] Remember, judges will be looking for:
Good team work
Good hygiene
Creativity
A tasty sandwich
Good presentation
No waste
A tidy workspace
Structural integrity
Nutrition
- [ ] Once judges have heard all the presentations, tasted each team’s sandwich and discussed their thoughts, the winners will be announced.

Second half (approx. 20 mins)
- [ ] Individuals to make a sandwich of their choice to take home in the lunch box they’ve brought (e.g. to eat for lunch the following day).
- [ ] Each young person gets 6 tokens to “buy” portions of ingredients from the “market place”. Again, they don’t have to spend all their tokens if they don’t want/need to.
- [ ] The winning team from earlier gets first dibs on ingredients (i.e. they get to choose before ingredients start running out!). Then the team that came 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th.

Once the evening’s format has been explained, get 4 more tables out (one for each team), put a sign on each table denoting the category of sandwich that team will be making along with a list reminding the team of what the judges will be looking for. Also give each team pens and paper to write notes to prepare for their presentation. Begin the activities.

In the final 20 minutes, once the activities are complete:
- [ ] Wash up, dry up, clear away, put tables away.
- [ ] Fall in. Go around the horseshoe with each young person telling everyone what they put in their sandwich.
- [ ] Lower the flag. Dismiss.
- [ ] Young people to take any left overs of the items they donated to the “market place”.
