Description

Making Cornish Pasties

Resources

To Purchase:-
Potato, Turnip/Sweed, Onion, egg, Black pepper, Salt, Shortcrust Pastry, Meat & Cheese (Cheese for Vegetarians), Flour, Grease Proof Paper,

2023 Based on 20 pasties (5 groups of 4 Scouts)
Quantities based per person:- 1 Potato, 1 Onion, 100g Shortcrust Pastry (is 1/4 of pack of pastry), 50g Beef Skirt/Chuck Steak or Mince. (This is more veg than required but allows all Scouts to chop something)
Shared Ingredients:- 1 Bag of flour, Salt, Black pepper, 2 x eggs, 1 Turnip/Sweed (finely chopped), 20 paper bags to take pasty home in.

Notes from 2023, was a rush to get pasties in oven by 9pm, we started at 8.20pm. Scouts took ages chopping ingredients. The meat was perfect qty, pastry spot on, loads of wasted veg but this quantity allowed all the kids to chop things. Needed 4 more sharp knives and 2 more chopping boards to allow for 2 per group. We had 5 groups. Should have brought more pastry & meat so adults could make pasties from spare veg. Jon wrote names by pasties and controlled the putting them in the oven, worked rally well. They cooked in approx 50 minutes.

From Homes:-
Rolling Pins (Audrey supplying 2, March 2023) really needed 5
Food Probe, extra baking trays (only one in church oven)
Tea Towels

Notes:-
Beavers:- pre cut the Turnip/Sweed, Potato and Onion for Beavers due to time constraints.
Scouts will Slice the onions and Potatos themselves. (Cut to small pieces)

Equipment:-
At St Gabriel's we have 6 sharp knives, 8 chopping boards, 5 scales, Loads of peelers & a Brush (to apply egg wash)
