Penny Hike

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

A walk around the local area using a coin as a means of navigation. Better in urban areas with many road junctions but could be adapted.

Resources

A standard coin. Any coin will do but larger ones are easier to use and see (especially catching it in the dark!).

Instructions

Split into small groups (Sixes, or so, are ideal) and ensure at least one Leader/responsible person is assigned to accompany each group.

Set off walking. At every road junction decide which direction is 'heads' and which is 'tails'. Toss the coin and continue the walk in the direction determined by the result.

As the walk progresses the group can be quizzed about road signs, road safety, items of local interest and so on.

The Leader can control the length of the walk either by simply calling time in order to get back to the starting point or by 'judicious coin tossing'! The event can be made as long or short as you like (in time or distance).
