Maps (either OS Explorer 307 [Consett and Derwent Reservoir] or print offs of the attached maps), Compasses, First Aid Kit, Waterproofs, Drink, etc...

Instructions

Set the young people various tasks based on their surroundings:
1 - identify where they are on the map (this might be by reading the contours, using field boundaries as lines across the fell or by using a couple of bearings and triangulation).
2 - correctly navigate to another point.
3 - give bearings to landmarks they can see (windturbines for instance).
4 - work on pacing to estimate distances.
