Kayaking - Taster session

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Kayaking - 90-120 min have a go session, including time for set up and pack away.

Take care with assigning badge credit:
-you will likely need to add the staged 'time on the water' credit manually by adding a new column in the records for that badge
-the Scouts Adventure "Develop/Environment/Other Ways" should only be awarded if the preparations before and after this event included meaningful coverage of these points
- likewise any of the requirements of levels 1 and 2 of the 'Paddlesports' staged activity badge will rarely be met by participants in a single taster session, but are included here to assist where groups have more competent paddlers joining in.

Resources

kayaks - appropriate range of sizes for the expected participants
paddles
buoyancy aids - appropriate sizes
helmets (if your RA requires them)
Plus leader's kit - see 'Session Checklist' attachment

Optional/also consider:
tennis ball for games
anything you will need for cleaning up/drying the changing areas at the end

Instructions

**Start: (see session checklist attachment)**
Kit up, check all BAs for secure fit
Fit YP to kayak size/adjust as required
Safety briefing
Warm up
Last check of YP before entering water

**Example of session format for on the water - many other variants work well too!:**
Short basic paddle to get a feel for boat control
Regroup and practice 1-2 basic strokes - e.g. sweep stroke, practice alone rotating slowly one way then another, then using strokes on both sides to go round and round faster. Then all line up facing one way, and move to the clock position shouted out - 3pm, 9pm, 2pm, 6pm, 12.30pm etc
Game
Teach another stroke - e.g. sudden braking with back paddling, practice solo.
Paddle back to start point
Rafted up game
End with choice of jump in, exit by bank, or capsize.

**Games ideas:**
1 - Manoeuvring - "Bart+Homer Simpson" - 1 x Homer says 'D'oh' repeatedly while chasing the 'Barts' (i.e. everyone else). The Barts have to keep saying 'Eat my shorts' until they are caught. If Homer manages to hit the front of a Bart boat three times with a paddle, then that boat becomes another 'Homer', and chases all the Barts around, shouting 'D'oh', until there is only one Bart left = the winner.

2 - Stability/general confidence - "Head Shoulders Knees and Jump" - raft up, number off alternate boats, 1,2,1,2 etc. All the 1's stand up in their boats while the 2's hang on tight. 1's sing head shoulders knees and toes. On second rendition they do head shoulders knees and jump. Swap over so the '2's go next.

3 - Netball - 2 teams compete to throw an easily-grabbable ball into an open kayak or hit a leader kayak with it. BUT the ball must be passed twice between players before making an attempt on the 'goal'. Players cannot paddle while holding the ball. The 'net' can and should move around, a LOT!
