Candle, Modelling Clay, Bowl of water, large glass jar, Matches

Instructions

Place the candle using modelling clay in the centre of bowl. Make sure the candle is tall enough to be above the water level when water is poured in the bowl. Place 2 blobs of modelling clay either side of the candle so that the jar can rest on these when placed over the candle. Fill bowl with water, Light the candle and place jar over the candle resting on the modelling clay. Make sure that the water can get under the rim of the jar. Mark the level of water in the jar. The candle will burn for a time but will eventually go out and you will see that the water rises up in the jar. You will find it rises about one fifth of the way up the jar.
