Description

Introduction to Drums & Percussion

Resources

Drums, percussion instruments or pots and pans with wooden spoons. At a pinch Beavers can clap.

Instructions

Place Beavers in a circle, explain drums and music, play, orchestrate, finish.

1. Explain the concepts of rhythm, tempo (speed) and dynamics (loud and quiet)
2. Try 3 games:

Game 1: Let's all play our drum
Beavers beat their drum (or clap) on the word 'drum'. The words 'let's all play our drum' provide the rhythm. The circle leader changes the tempo and dynamics of the words, and the beavers play in time and copy the dynamic. Once the beavers have the concept, then you can miss out the word 'drum' and see if they can still beat in time. ytou can also expand the rhythm phrase to 'let's all play our drum becuase it's so much fun' and they beat on 'fun'. miss out more and more words to make this exercise harder.

Game 2: Drum call.
Call 1, then hit 1, call 2 they hit 2.
Switch it, and call 1 to hit 2, and call 2 to hit one.
Expand it to call 1, 2, 3 and 4 (3 is quaver quaver crotchet, 4 is 4 quavers).
Allow the beavers to make the call going round the circle.

Game 3: Do not clap / drum this back
The circle leader claps or beats short rhythms, and the beavers copy them back.
If the leader beats crotchet crotchet quaver quaver crotchet (do not clap this back) the beavers must not play it back. If they do, the circle leader wins a point. if the beavers stay silent they win a point.
