Make a fire steel out of components
Resources
Buy a bunch of cheap firesteels from ebay and take them apart
550 Firecord - bushcraftstore sell 25ft for £11.95
Wood - ideally hard wood as softwood splits

Drill
Instructions
Give scouts a 20cm piece of wood and a sharp knife each.
Tell them to whittle the end of the wood into a curved handle, like a dome on the end.
Saw the handle so it's about an inch long.
Drill a hole into the handle, and push/hammer the rod into it so it stays put.
Drill a hole for the cord.
Thread the firecord into the hole, add the striker, and tie in a knot.
