Scouts route planning for the final Expedition Challenge
Route cards, maps of the area, compasses, pens, paper, pencils
Get the scouts into the planned groups for the expedition challenge. Set up around tables and give each a map, or a printed off extract from a map. This map needs to include the campsite. The scouts have prior experience planning routes and reading maps, so given a starting point and finishing point (campsite) they should be able to plan a route that will take them around 4 to 5 hours to walk (using Naithsmith's rule). Once this is planned and leaders have approved they should write this up onto a route card, and include at least one 'escape route'. Then they can plan the second day's walk with the campsite as a starting point, and the finishing point (4 hours max). If they do not finish they can continue next week.
