Compass for each group
Photocopies of maps-these can be street maps or ordnance survey maps
Mark each photocopied map with points 1 to 5 in different directions

Introduction
The Guides will be able to use a compass and understand its importance during a hill walk.

Instructions
Divide the Guides into groups of three.
Give each group a compass and a copy of a map.
Show the Guides how to set a map to north using a compass.
With the map set, ask the groups to use the compass to see what direction they would be going from point A to B, from B to C and so on.
Discuss safety on the hills and especially what to do in bad weather.
Discuss how to navigate in bad weather using a compass.
Using the map, ask each group to navigate between particular points using a compass. Describe the route in compass points.

Debrief
Discuss with the Guides whether or not they now have a better understanding of a compass and how to use it.
