Map of local area, photocopied to allow one per group of 3 Guides

Instructions

Introduction
The Guides will learn basic map reading skills and put them into practice.

Maps
•photocopies of a street map of your area for your proposed walk
or
•photocopies of a section of an ordnance survey map of your proposed walk
Include legend for the map and scale.

Instructions
With your Leaders decide on a walk to be done with the Guides.
•Divide the Guides into groups of three.
•Give each group a copy of the map including the legend.
•Discuss the different symbols.
•Ask each group to find a certain symbol on the map.
•Discuss the scale of the map and calculate distances.
•Take the Guides for a walk.
•Ask each group to navigate different sections of the walk from one point to another.

Debrief
Discuss with the Guides if they feel they have better map reading skills now that can be put to use.
