The Promise Corner
‘Oh dear’ sighed the Eyes as big tears gathered slowly, one by one and trickled down the Nose beneath. ‘Whatever shall I do?
‘Whatever’s the matter? Said the Nose, smelling the salt tears.
‘I can’t see things very well when they are a long way away,’ replied the Eyes. ‘So I’m to have two glass things in front of me to look through; and however I’m going to hold them there in front of me, I’m sure I don’t know. Oh dear!’ The Eyes wept again.
‘Don’t worry snorted the Nose. ‘We’ll fix a little bridge between the two bits of glass, and I’ll balance them on me.’
‘ That won’t be very safe,’ said the two Ears together, over-hearing as usual. ‘Put two little arms on each side, and bend the ends round us, and they’ll be perfectly safe then.’
‘Oh thank you!’ said the Eyes, cheering up a little.
‘They’ll get dirty,’ said a gruff voice from a little distance away. ‘I can’t hold them, but I can breathe on them to get them clean,’ added Mouth, for it was he who had spoken.
‘And I,’ said the Hands, who were busy mopping up the tears, ‘I will polish them with a clean hankie or tissue, and they’ll sparkle like diamonds.’
‘Thank you so much,’ blinked the Eyes. ‘I feel much better already and I shall look forward to having my glasses, now that you will all help.’
When the spectacles came, Hair, who had listened to all this conversation, but was not good at holding, or breathing, or polishing, though very artistic, arranged itself prettily around the glassed, and everyone was happy.
That is the story of a ‘Six’ that helped, by doing different things. Some of us are good at one thing, and not so good at another. Some can skip well, but can’t catch a ball easily. Now, if all the Six help, each doing what she can and helping the others who find that particular thing hard, that is keeping our Brownie Promise too.
If you wear spectacles, will you remember that, when you put them on? If you don’t need to wear them, remember it when you watch other people putting theirs on.
