The Generation Game

Objective: To teach what happens when something is taken from its natural environment. Gives an opportunity to discuss non-renewable resources and stresses the principle "leave what you find"

Instructions
Set out a bowl of M&Ms or your favourite sweets behind some sort of barrier so the group does not know what they are.
Separate the Brownies into smaller groups, one group of two, one group of 3, one group of four etc.
Next, tell the Brownies they are going to be allowed to go and observe what is behind the barrier and "consume" it but may not remove it in its present form. Don't allow the Brownies to discuss what is behind the barrier until every group has taken part in the activity.

Allow the first group to have 2 minutes behind the barrier, the second group a minute and a half, third group a minute etc.

Outcome: How much is left for the last generation? (Usually not much) In Pow wow talk about what they thought about while behind the barrier? Did they feel compelled to leave some for the next group?
What about our non-renewable resources? Oil? Gas?
