Description

Make a wormery

Resources

2 litre empty bottles, sand, soil worms, black paper cling film

Instructions

1. Carefully cut off the top of the bottle, leaving a tall container.

2. Fill the bottle with different layers of damp soil and sand. The soil layers should be about 3cm deep and the sand layers
thinner (about 5mm).

3. Break the dead leaves into smaller pieces and put these on the surface of the top layer.

4. Put the earthworms on the top.

5. Cover the outside of the bottle with a tube made from thick black paper. This is to keep the light out, so make sure it fits the bottle
tightly and use several layers of paper.

6. Put the container in a cool place and make sure the soil stays damp – NOT wet!

7. After two or three days, lift the black paper cover and see what has happened.

8. You can keep your wormery in a cool, dark place for up to two weeks, taking a look every couple of days to see what is happening, and making sure the soil is still damp. When it is time to let the worms go release them back to where you found them.
