Description
Activity to encourage debate about the value of various parts of the production of bananas, from workers to shops.
Resources
Printout(s) cut up to share among 5 groups
Laptop & projector if using Sharer spreadsheet
A banana, if illustrating sharing with an actual banana
Instructions
Ask the Beavers/ Cubs:
- where are bananas grown?
- what is involved in getting a banana to you from the plantation?
Describe the 5 roles (worker, Owner, Shipper, Importer, Supermarket). Split the Beavers/ Cubs into 5 groups and get a leader to talk through their role with them using the handout.
How much does a banana cost? Answer = 30p
Ask each group how much they think their share should be starting with the workers.
If using the spreadsheet to illustrate shares, enter 0 in each roles share in the table then put in their bids. The graph will dynamically represent the split and the table the total cost.
Oh dear, the sum of the shares is greater than 30p! Who is willing to drop their share?
In reality it is the supermarket and importer who set the shares.
Enter the real split into the spreadsheet (worker to Supermarket is 1, 5, 4, 13, 7).
Pass a banana to the Supermarket group and invite them to cut off their share of the banana, then pass along to the other groups in turn to take their share.
The workers get what is left!
How does everyone feel?
Finally, the leaders with each group eat the banana. How fair is that!
