A simple way to re-enforce compass work

Local big scale map, Atlas, Compass

Instructions

Pick a number of local landmarks, in our town it was things like Aldi, The Railway Station, The Church etc.
Get the cubs to point in the direction they think the landmark is and read the basic direction off the compass, it doesn't need to be a bearing just a basic "North West" , "South" etc
Now look on your map and see where the places really are.
Now take it wider, Africa, USA, North Pole, Disney Land and so on
It is really quite surprising how much debate this caused
