Run this activity over 2 weeks -
Week 1 - prepare and set up the experiment
Week 2 - compare and discuss the results

Resources

4 kitchen knives (for cutting bread in half)- 1 per six
32 labels- 8 per six
16 biros- 4 per six
16 ziplock bags (or bags with ties)- 4 per six
4 slices white sliced bread- 1 per six
4 slices fresh bread- 1 per six
Dropper bottle (for one six)
teaspoon (for another six)
tablespoon (for another six)
16 jars -4 per six
2 pieces of fruit (preferably soft eg plum, peach, or a few berries) shared between the sixes
1 small pot of plain yogurt- shared between all sixes 

Instructions

BREAD BAGS:

Each Six puts a different amount of water in their bread in their 4 bags- 
2 bags with ½ pieces of fresh bread, 
2 bags with ½ pieces of sliced cheap bread,

1st six:     no water (on each piece of bread)
2nd six:     3-6 drops (on each piece of bread)
3rd six:    1 tsp (on each piece of bread)
4th six:    1 tbsp (3 tsp) (on each piece of bread)

Each bag should be labelled with 3 bits of information
1    name of the six  
2    amount of water per bag/jar 
3    where they will be stored the week

Then each six put 1 piece of each of the 2 bread types in a dark cupboard, the other 2 bags (1 of each type) on a window sill.

JARS OF FRUIT AND YOGURT. 

4 jars per six, (that way all cubs can do either 1 piece of bread or a jam jar of fruit or yogurt and they are all involved.)
2 fruit and 2 yogurt per six. Only need very small amount of each.
 
Each Six puts a different amount of water, the  same amounts of water as they did for the bread, in their 4 jars 

1st six:     no water (in the jar)
2nd six:     3-6 drops (in the jar)
3rd six:    1 tsp (in the jar)
4th six:    1 tbsp (3 tsp) (in the jar)

Each jar should be labelled with 3 bits of information
1    name of the six  
2    amount of water per bag/jar 
3    where they will be stored for the week

Then each six puts
 1 jar of fruit and 1 labelled jar of yogurt in a dark cupboard and 
 1 jar of fruit and 1 labelled jar of yogurt on a window sill.


Each adult helper asks their six what they think will happen.
