Description

We were making hot air balloons as part of the Air Activities Badge, stage 2 part 3a. This one is a combination of a number of different methods and we managed to get all the balloons flying.

HOT AIR BALLOON INSTRUCTIONS

MATERIALS
Plastic pedal bin liner
4 x Bendy plastic straws
4 x Relighting candles
Tin foil
Sellotape


INSTRUCTIONS

1. Sellotape two straws together, straight end to straight end. Do the same with the other two straws

2. Sellotape the two sets of straws together forming a cross. Bendy ends should be pointing upwards.

3. Make a try using the tin foil and secure that across the straw cross.

4. Melt the ends of the candles and put them in the corners of the tin foil tray

5. Sellotape the bin liner to the upturned straws

6. Light the candles and let the balloon float upwards once the bag has filled with air. (We found it better for the Scout to stand on a chair holding the plastic bag as it filled with air as this stopped the bag from melting)
