Instructions

Flag break + inspection
[5 minutes]

After inspections start night with North/East/South/West game to introduce 4 cardinal directions. Introduce 8 cardinal directions after a few rounds. Start eliminating the last person to get there to make it more competitive. Discuss what we are doing before so they know the background to the game.
[10 minutes]

Map key relay - Split into 3 teams lined up at 1 end of the hall. Ask cubs about what things they might find on a map. Wait until a key is suggested. Discuss what a key is used for. To help you read and understand the map. Each team has 8 picture + 8 word cards at the other end of the hall that they need to bring back and match. Only 1 person per team can run at a time and they can only pickup 1 item at a time. 5 minute time limit per race. The first team to correctly match all the pairs gets 3 points. 2nd place gets 2 points. 3rd place gets 1 point. 0 points if they didn't get it in the time limit. Rotate the Map Key sets around so that each team gets to try each one. Repeat relay.
[20 minutes]

Maps - The first task is to orientate the map to point north with the help of a compass. We learnt earlier about the directions on a compass. Talk briefly about the needle + how to use a compass before splitting into small groups with a map of the local area each. The second task is to locate the scout hall on the map. They can look for things they know nearby like parks/schools/monuments. (If they are really struggling, ask about what they know is near the scout hall. This will help narrow the area.)
[10 minutes]

We now know what maps look like so individually, get cubs to draw a simplified map of the local area. You could include where your house is, where the scout hall is, where your school is and other things important to you. Mark any places of interest you can think of. They can keep the local maps in their groups as a guide to what it might look like. (This also covers part of a requirement for local knowledge badge - Using a map. Cubs who attend both weeks will also complete this requirement for the local knowledge badge)
[10 minutes]

Finally - Discuss equipment that you might take if you were going on a walk. What would you need. What would the adults need? Make sure this is covered well as we will be going on a local walk next week. Make sure info is sent home informing parents that we are planning to go on a short walk next week.
[10 minutes]

Finish meeting with another game.
[10 minutes]
