Cyclist Activity Badge
Badge Requirements:

How to earn your badge
1. Find out why it’s important to wear safety equipment like a helmet, reflective clothing and lights
2. Show how to put on and wear a cycle helmet correctly
3. Show how to pump up a tyre
4. Go for a short ride in a safe place

Plan for the evening:

Young Leader: As beavers are arriving Young Leader to run game to focus kids eg:Traffic Lights
The Beaver Scouts run round the room, a leader calls out the colours of traffic lights and they perform the actions as detailed below:

• Red - Stop,
• Amber - Find a partner, do piggy back and freeze,
• Green - run,
• Car Crash – all fall down shouting .BANG.

Opening ceremony 5mins

Beavers will be split into four groups and rotated through each activity.
Each activity should last approximately 15mins

* 1st Activity – Safety Equipment *

Equipment needed:
1. Helmet (each child needs their own)
2. High Vis Jacket
3. Lights
4. Puncture repair kit
5. Spare inner tube

Ask the Beavers:
1. What do you think safety equipment is?
2. Why do you think it is important to wear or carry safety equipment?
3. What may happen if you didn’t wear safety equipment?
4. Who needs to wear the safety equipment?
5. Why do I need to tell someone where I’m going or which route I’m taking?
6. What basic checks should you do before riding your bike? E.g. tyre pressure, brakes work
7. Why are there often reflectors on wheels, seat post, bell & handlebars?
Explain to the beavers the purpose of the safety equipment and discuss the different types of equipment and when they may be used at different stages of the day (day & night).
Demonstrate to the Beavers how to put on a helmet correctly and then ask them to have a go with their own helmet.


* 2nd Activity – Pumping up a Tyre *
Equipment needed:
1. 3 Bikes
2. 3 Pumps

Ask the Beavers:
1. What is the pump used for?
2. Where should you keep your pump when you go for a cycle?
Demonstrate to the Beavers how to pump up a tyre and then let each beaver have a turn.


* 3rd Activity – Cycling *
Equipment needed:
1. Bikes
2. Helmets
3. First Aid Kit

Plan to cycle around the pathway at the recreation ground.
They must follow certain instructions when cycling around the pathway. Example:
• Beavers to cycle in single file along pathway.
• Look both ways when they make a turn at end of pathways for incoming pedestrians.
• Look over your shoulder when setting off & making a turn.
• Signal with hand to show which way you are going.
• Cycle on the left

* 4th Activity - Agility *
Equipment needed:
1. Bikes
2. Helmets
3. Cones

Within the basketball court, plan to cycle around the obstacle course.
. Weave through the cones.
. Stopping when needed.
. Try to keep balanced.

All back to skate ramp to close session.
