Description

Complete some activities supplied by your Leader using full concentration and then do them while texting or talking and discuss what happens. How do you think this would affect your safety on the road?

Resources

 Items necessary to complete the tasks selected from the suggested list e.g. jigsaw, remote-controlled car, needle and thread.
 Pen and paper for each Guide to note her observations.

Instructions

Divide Guides into pairs and have them watch each other’s ability and timing while doing some of the following with full concentration:
• Do an easy jigsaw
• Write a poem you know by heart
• Operate a remote-controlled car
• Go into a shop and buy a suggested item
• Push a buggy or wheelchair around
• Say the alphabet backwards
• Thread a needle
• Button /zip up a jacket or coat
• Hop the length of the room in a straight line

Repeat the activity while talking, texting or a combination of both on a mobile phone.
Either way, the Guide must have some level of concentration on what she is saying/texting. She must hold it to her ear if talking or in her hand if texting.

Debrief
• Did it take longer to do the tasks the second time?
• Did the Guide do them with the same proficiency?
• Did the Guide do anything wrong?
• Does talking on a mobile phone reduce levels of concentration?
