Description

Use the webchat on the Scoutlink service to talk to Scouts from other Countries. (Ensure young people are closely supervised whilst using the service.)

Ask international Scouts what the Promise they make is and what games they like to play. Organise to play the game later in the session.

Resources

Computers, tablets, phones or other internet enabled devices that can run the website.

Instructions

Log on devices.
Load up: http://webchat.scoutlink.net/
Setup group nicknames - ensure that they are all related, e.g. [GroupName]01, [GroupName]02, [GroupName]03. Where possible also have a [GroupName] Leader signed in to the same channel. This means if there are any problems you are easy to reach.
If using the service outside of JOTI sign on in advance of the session to try and organise for some people to be on to talk. It is best to do this at a similar time to when your session will run.

10 min - Talk to international Scouts on the computer whilst other children are on other bases. Find out about games they play and their promise. / Alternatively find out about the culture of another country. / Introduce yourself to a Scout from another Country. (Be careful not to tell them too many personal details - stick to first name.)
10 min (possibly towards end of session) - Play the game that you have learned about. (Or agree on which of the games the young people have learned of to play.) / Make something to represent the Country based on what you have found out. This could be a digital poster or montage of images.
